🐟 Logging catches

The catch log is the center of riggr β€” everything else (the map pins, the season stats, the trip reports, the β€œwhat's actually working” answers) is built from it. The form looks long, but only species is required for a landed fish. Everything else is there for the days you want the full story.

Where to find it

Phone: the orange + button β†’ Log catch (or the Log a catch button on Home). Web: dashboard Home β†’ Log a catch, or from any trip page. Mid-bite with no time for forms? That's what Flurry mode is for.

1. Landed or a strike?

Every catch is either 🎣 Landed (default) or πŸ’₯ Strike β€” a fish that hit but didn't come in. Species is required for a landed fish and optional on a strike, for the obvious reason: you usually never saw what whacked that rod. Strikes count toward your hit rate (β€œ8 for 14”), not your landed totals β€” and they matter, because the line, bait, and time of a lost fish read patterns just as well as a netted one.

2. The fish and the water

  • Weight (lbs) and length (in) β€” optional, decimal-friendly.
  • Bottom depth β€” type it, or tap πŸ“‘ Auto (Premium) to fill it from NOAA survey depth data at your coordinates.
  • Water temp, trolling speed, rigger depth β€” the numbers you'll wish you had next season.
  • Photo β€” camera or library. Photos show on your catch, in feeds, and in trip reports.

3. Gear β€” one tap if you set up your spread

If you've laid out My Spread, a β€œWhich line did this fish come on?” quick-pick sits right in the form: tap the line that fired and the rod position, presentation, setting, flasher, and bait all fill themselves. No spread (or a one-off rig)? Every field is right below it: rod position, presentation (rigger, diver, board, and so on) with its setting, diver hardware, flasher/dodger, and lure β€” picked from the catalog or typed free-hand.

4. Voice Log β€” talk instead of type

The πŸŽ™ Voice Log button at the top of the catch form (Premium β€” phone and web both) records you saying something like β€œ12-pound king, 65 down on the port rigger, green flasher, 2.4 miles an hour” and fills the form from it β€” species, weight, depths, speed, gear, even flipping the strike toggle if you say you lost it. Wet hands never touch the keyboard; you just review and save. On the phone it's also listed under Tools β†’ Voice Log.

Baits you name are matched to your real tackle β€” your Tackle Box first, then the catalog β€” so β€œmag moonshine spoon” lands as the actual linked lure, not just text. When riggr isn't confident it keeps your exact words instead of guessing a wrong lure. The same trick powers voice spread setup β€” see the My Spread guide.

5. What riggr fills in for you

  • Location: opening Log a Catch fills GPS with your current spot. On a tracked trip, changing the catch time snaps the pin to where the boat was. You can still tap Use Current Location, Use a port, or type coordinates. GPS is optional β€” a catch with no spot still saves.
  • Trip: on the phone, an active trip claims the catch automatically. On the web, pick from the Trip dropdown (or leave it a standalone catch). See the trips guide.
  • Conditions snapshot: when you save, riggr quietly stamps the catch with conditions near your spot β€” wind speed and direction, wave height, air temp, surface temp, barometer β€” from the nearest available station. Zero taps; it's just there when you look back in November.

6. Who sees it β€” and how precisely

Two separate controls at the bottom of the form:

  • Who can see this catch? β€” the visibility of the catch itself.
  • Location sharing β€” πŸ“ Exact or βš“ Port. On Port, other anglers see only the nearest port β€” your exact GPS never leaves the server. You always see your own true spot, and you can set a profile-wide default and override it per catch. More on how pins render in the map guide.

7. Fixing it later

Nothing is carved in stone: open any catch and tap Edit (phone or web) to correct species, add the weight once it's on a scale, or attach the photo you took an hour later. Strikes logged in Flurry mode wait in an β€œAdd details” queue for exactly this.
